Remote Only 2.1 is an extension that allows you to turn on AppleTalk networking when both the printer port and the modem port on your computer are already in use (for example, for a serial printer and a modem). Without this extension installed, you cannot use an application that requires AppleTalk to be active at the same time your computer is connected to a modem and a serial printer.

  9. For example, if your computer has two serial ports and you use one for a modem and the other for a StyleWriter printer, Remote Only allows you to use an application such as NetPresenz (which requires AppleTalk) without disconnecting either the modem or the printer.

The Remote Only extension is compatible with both “classic” AppleTalk software (the Network control panel) and Open Transport software (the AppleTalk control panel). If you use classic networking, Remote Only appears as an icon in the Network control panel. If you use Open Transport, Remote Only appears in the “Connect via” pop-up menu in the AppleTalk control panel.

  16. To install Remote Only, follow these steps:

  18. 1. Drag the Remote Only icon to the System Folder icon on your startup disk (not the open System Folder window).
  19.     A dialog box appears asking if you want to move Remote Only to the Extensions folder.

  21. 2. Click OK.
  22.     Remote Only is placed in the Extensions folder inside your System Folder.

  24. 3. Choose Restart from the Special menu.
  25.     When your computer starts up again, Remote Only is installed.

  27. Activating Remote Only in the Network control panel

  29. To activate Remote Only if you use classic AppleTalk software (the Network control panel), follow these steps:

  31. 1. Open the Network control panel.
  32.  
  33. 2. Click the Remote Only icon.
  34.  
  35. 3. Close the Network control panel.
  36.     You can now turn on AppleTalk in the Chooser while using your computer’s serial ports for other functions.

  41. To activate Remote Only if you use Open Transport (the AppleTalk control panel), follow these steps:

  43. 1. Open the AppleTalk control panel.
  44.  
  45. 2. Choose Remote Only from the “Connect via” pop-up menu.

  47. 3. Close the AppleTalk control panel.

  49. 4. In the dialog box that appears, click OK to save the change you made. 
  50.     You can now turn on AppleTalk while using your computer’s serial ports for other functions.
